Zambia is digitising its healthcare supply chain to address the recurring theft of pharmaceuticals from public health facilities.
This is one of the steps implemented by the government to combat theft, which has not only jeopardised the fight against disease outbreaks but has also prompted the US to express concern.
The US is a key donor to Zambia's health sector, and Ambassador to Zambia, Michael Gonzales, recently spoke out against the scam.
Dr. Elijah Muchima, the Zambian minister of health, responded.
He told the US Embassy that, in order to increase supply chain transparency, the Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency has installed an advanced digital stock management system.
"This system enables real-time monitoring of medical inventories, ensuring accurate record-keeping and reducing diversions and/or theft of medicines," the minister said.
Minister Muchima stated that the government was in talks with the US administration to address their concerns, implement effective solutions, and continue the solid collaboration that has underpinned Zambia's healthcare progress.
“The government is committed to transparency, accountability, and justice in delivering quality healthcare to every Zambian,” he said.
