SMART Zambia, in partnership with the Shiwang'andu Town Council, has deployed Starlink internet services to nine strategic sites in the district of Muchinga province, bridging the digital divide for underserved and unserved communities.
According to SMART Zambia, the program is a key step towards boosting digital access, healthcare, education, and economic opportunities for citizens of the area.
This comes as the country intends to have 80% of its population participating in the digital economy by 2026 as part of its Eighth National Development Plan (8NDP), a five-year plan outlining Zambia's strategic development goals from 2022 to 2026. It emphasises the necessity of economic reform and job creation.
Sites connected to the low-Earth orbit satellite internet service include six health facilities, a secondary school, a civic centre, and the district health office.
“This initiative aims to enhance connectivity and improve access to vital services in the region. The SMART Zambia team and Shiwang’andu Town Council are committed to continuing their collaboration, exploring new ways to leverage technology and drive growth in the region,” said SMART Zambia in an update.
