Zambia intends to use nuclear science and technology to alleviate some of the country's challenges, including the persistent drought.
Brilliant Habeenzu, permanent secretary for technology and science, stated that integrating nuclear science and technology into national development programs was critical in addressing some of the world's primary challenges.
Speaking at the 68th General Assembly of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, Austria's capital, he said food insecurity and the spread emerging diseases could be solved through the use of nuclear science and technology.
According to Habeenzu, climate change has exacerbated many of the challenges that countries face, resulting in catastrophic weather events such as prolonged droughts and severe flooding, and he recommends the use of technology to address these issues.
He said: “We commend the agency for its ongoing efforts to promote the peaceful applications of nuclear technology worldwide. In this regard, the Zambian government reaffirms its commitment to collaborate with the agency.”
