Following a suspension in February for alleged noncompliance, Cameroon has granted Yango, a ride-hailing network operated by Russian multinational technology corporation Yandex, a temporary licence.
The Minister of Transport, Ngalle Bibehe Jean Ernest Massena, gave a temporary licence to Enangue Holding Sarl in a decision dated 16 August 2023, allowing the local company to carry out cab transport service in Cameron through the digital platform Yango.
The provisional licence is valid for one year and can be renewed.
The minister stated that the licence was provided in accordance with a 2021 land transport law and a 2022 prime ministerial resolution outlining the requirements for entering the land transport industry and assimilated professions.
"The current provisional licence issued to the company Enangue Holding Sarl is personal, non-transferable, and not rentable," Massena stressed.
Yango has been in hot trouble since its inception in 2021 in the major cities of Yaounde and Douala, following complaints from road transport trade unions that it was operating clandestinely and unfairly competing with regular cab services providers.
Yango has been given a deadline to comply or face suspension.
Yango previously stated that its business model was not well understood. According to the company, it just provides information services and that transportation, support, and auxiliary services are provided by independent third parties
