Vodafone has unveiled its 120 kilometre fibre network connecting Ghana, Togo and Burkina Faso.
The Bolgatanga Cinkasse International Fibre Connectivity Project, the first of its kind in West Africa, is a collaboration between Vodafone Wholesale, a subsidiary of Vodafone Ghana, and Ghana’s Ministry of Communications.
Vodafone Wholesale has an extensive fibre network distribution all over the country, and provides bandwidth to internet service providers and mobile networks.
The fibre connection of Ghana with Togo and Burkina Faso allows for the free flow of the internet bandwidth in Ghana to the rest of the West African region, and the project effectively turns the country into a cable gateway.
The project began in November 2011 with a sod cutting ceremony in Bolgatanga and eight months later dignitaries from Togo, Burkina Faso and Ghana have gathered in Cinkasse to mark its successful completion.
The Guest of Honour, the secretary general of International Telecommunications Union (ITU), Hamadoun Toure, commended the collaborating countries and the companies for the exceptional teamwork in completing the project.
The managing director for Vodafone Wholesale, Lucy J. Quist, said “We partnered with the government on this project for one great reason - to bring to light a dream that has been on the drawing board for a while; a dream which has the ability to increase the investment opportunities in Ghana for international organisations and offer greater opportunities for growth."
Quist said Vodafone Wholesale believed in the potential of this region of Ghana saying the company would not relent in effort to invest in areas that would improve the standard of living for the people of Ghana.
