Uganda’s newest mobile operator, K2 Telecom, says it has attained 60,000 customers in its first week of operations.

Launched on January 1 this year, K2 became Uganda’s latest telecommunications operator, joining Bharti Airtel, MTN, Uganda Telecom (UT), Warid Telecom and Hits Telecom.

The market of the landlocked East African nation has been characterised by intense competition. However, there is room for growth as the country’s mobile penetration rate is 47% while its fixed line usage figures stand at 1.6% of the population, according to BuddeComm research.

Despite the opportunities though, K2 has had a tough start with officials from the firm having told the country’s Observer newspaper that they are negotiating interconnection fees with network.

This means that subscribers of K2 cannot, at the time of writing, make calls to other subscribers on networks such as MTN.

Nevertheless, K2’s chief executive officer, Saul Ssegawa Katumba, is upbeat about his firm’s future prospects in Uganda.

He has been quoted in Uganda’s Observer as saying K2 has the “cheapest intra-network rates” in the market at Shs 100 per minute for voice calls and Shs 40 per text message.

"Our target is the mass market, the young people who form the biggest clientele of the telecom market,” said Katumba.

“They want fair rates, and a better service; this is what we are offering them," Katumba added.
