Caller back tunes, unsolicited messages and advertisement calls have been causing distress among Uganda’s mobile phone users and need to be investigated, say officials in the country.

Uganda's minister of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Nyombi Thembo, said the government had already directed the Uganda Communications Commission to handle the matter of the messages urgently.

"We cannot sit back and watch this go on,” said Thembo.

He urged the Uganda content developers to allow mobile subscribers to make their own choices to choose what they wanted to receive.

However, he was also quick to add that government could not ban the services either.

“We are not about to control the companies to go into innovation, but they must give options to avoid infringing on people’s rights through provision of clear options on screen to avoid taking of unsolicited services," he said.
