Malawi-based innovator Hudson Mwangalika has unveiled a smart waste bin that automatically opens when a person approaches it, aiming to improve sanitation and reduce contact with potentially contaminated surfaces in public spaces.

Mwangalika said the innovation was inspired by Malawi president Arthur Peter Mutharika's Executive Order Number 2, which requires strict adherence to sanitation and hygiene standards in public places, workplaces and schools.

The executive order requires strict hygiene and sanitation standards to be implemented nationwide to reduce the spread of waterborne diseases, including cholera.

Speaking in an interview with MBC digital , Hudson Mwangalika, inventor of the device, said the smart bin is designed to encourage proper waste disposal while minimising physical contact with waste containers, helping to reduce the spread of germs and disease.

"The innovation was motivated by the need to support the implementation of the sanitation and hygiene standards outlined in the Executive Order," he said.

The device uses sensor technology to detect the presence of a user and automatically opens its lid when someone approaches. Once waste has been disposed of, the lid closes automatically, eliminating the need to touch the bin.

Mwangalika has appealed for support from government institutions, local councils, financial institutions and the private sector to enable wider deployment of the technology across the country.

He specifically called on the ministries of Health, Water and Sanitation, and Education to consider adopting the innovation in facilities under their jurisdiction.

Mwangalika said broader adoption of the smart bin could contribute to cleaner environments in schools, hospitals, markets and offices, where maintaining hygiene remains a public health priority.

The innovator recently received recognition after being appointed a Global Peace Chain ambassador, a role that acknowledges individuals contributing innovative solutions to societal challenges.

The smart bin is the latest addition to Mwangalika's growing list of inventions. He previously developed an obstacle-avoidance device designed to help visually impaired people navigate their surroundings more safely.
