Automotive navigation systems company TomTom says it has expanded its map service in Namibia, Botswana, Kenya, Mozambique and Angola; bringing its total coverage of Africa to 10 million kilometres of roads.

General manager for TomTom Africa, Danny Grobben, says the extended coverage takes the form of its MultiNet offering, which is a fully navigable product that can be used for in-car, portable navigation devices (PND) or mobile phone navigation.

Other enhances for the TomTom’s African operations include that the company says it has increased addresses in South Africa to 92% of the country’s 49 million population. The company has further added postal code areas for government customers, while also updating 4,000 street names in South Africa.

The company is present in all African countries, while globally it maps more than 200 countries.

Grobben says the African market is becoming increasingly key to TomTom’s business.

“It is a fast growing market, especially in the mobile markets,” says Grobben.

“While top line contribution is small at the moment, we expect a larger contribution over the years to come,” he adds.
