Telecom Networks Malawi (TNM) has announced plans to construct a third datacentre in the country within the next three months to support growing demand for digital services and improve network performance.

The company made the announcement on 5 March in Lilongwe during the launch of Voice over LTE (VoLTE), technology that enables voice calls to be transmitted over the operator’s high-speed LTE network.

TNM CEO Michel Herbert said the planned datacentre will strengthen the company’s infrastructure as demand for data and digital communication continues to rise among customers.

He explained that the new facility is expected to improve service reliability, support increased internet usage and enhance the overall customer experience.

Herbert said the introduction of VoLTE marks a significant step in improving voice communication on TNM’s network.

“With VoLTE, customers will now be able to make high-quality voice calls using our LTE network while still accessing high-speed data services at the same time,” he said.

He added that the technology offers clearer voice quality, faster call connection times and improved network efficiency compared to traditional voice services. It enables users to continue browsing the internet, streaming content or using other online services without interruption while on a call.

Herbert added that the telecommunications company has upgraded its internet services in recent months to improve connectivity and extend coverage to more areas across the country.

Telecommunications companies in Malawi continue to invest in network expansion and new technologies as more people rely on mobile connectivity for communication, business and online services.

According to TNM the planned datacentre and the introduction of VoLTE are expected to play a key role in supporting the country’s growing digital economy.
