State-owned telco Moçambique Telecom (Tmcel) has commenced Proof of Concept (POC) testing with ANGOSAT-2 to evaluate the use of the Angolan satellite's capabilities in providing telecommunications services across the country.
The initiative, announced by Angola's Ministry of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication (MINTTICS), marks a major step towards formalising a commercial agreement to distribute communication and broadcasting signals across Mozambique using Angolan space infrastructure.
Tmcel’s entry into this testing phase directly follows successful trials by public broadcaster Televisão de Moçambique , which previously initiated its own POC to transmit public television signals via the satellite.
The partnership stems from a bilateral memorandum signed in June 2026 on the sidelines of the 5th National Communications Conference in Maputo.
“With the start of Tmcel's tests, ANGOSAT-2 reinforces its presence in the regional market and demonstrates the potential of Angolan space infrastructure to support telecommunications and broadcasting operators from other African countries,” the MINTTICS said.
On a broader scale, the cooperation between the two sides is part of a coordinated regional expansion strategy within the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
This pilot mirrors a trend across the SADC region to dismantle cross-border digital bottlenecks, harmonise ICT policies, and reduce dependency on Western subsea infrastructure.
Similar initiatives are already underway across the region, including an identical Commercial Pilot Agreement signed between Angola's National Space Programme Management Office and Telecom Namibia to validate satellite-driven backhaul.
Together, these parallel treaties advance the SADC Regional Infrastructure Development Master Plan under the ICT priority, which aims to upgrade digital backbone infrastructure and telecoms to boost regional connectivity and lower trade costs.
