Tlou Energy and Kala Data are considering expanding their data centre in Botswana.

The Kala Data Centre was commissioned in February 2026 and generated initial revenue at a proof-of-concept scale.

Tlou said the commissioning demonstrated the operation of an integrated process comprising gas production, gas gathering, on-site power generation and the supply of electricity to the data centre.

It also provided the company with operational data that can be used to identify improvements in gas supply, generation reliability and data centre capacity utilisation.

Dr Ian Campbell, executive chairman of Tlou Energy, provided the update in the company’s annual report for the year ended 30 June 2026.

He noted the installed data centre had been designed for a power capacity of up to approximately 1MW.

Operations during the year under review were materially below that capacity because of the limited gas presently available from the connected production well and the early-stage nature of the facility.

Work during the latter part of the year focused on monitoring and optimising the performance of the gas gathering system, generators and associated electrical equipment.

The company commenced planning for a dedicated gas pipeline to connect the Lesedi 6 production well to the data centre generation system.

Campbell said if constructed and successfully commissioned, the pipeline might provide additional gas to the facility.

“The timing and outcome of this work are subject to funding, detailed design, required approvals, construction and the performance of the Lesedi 6 well,” he said.

Campbell said the initial project was intended to provide operating experience and a basis from which the parties could assess potential future expansion.

“Any expansion will depend on a number of factors, including sustainable gas availability, technical performance, funding and commercial requirements,” he said.

Kala Data owns and operates the data centre equipment. Tlou supplies gas for on-site power generation in accordance with the parties’ agreement.
