TikTok will launch a nationwide training programme in Kenya to offer comprehensive platform expertise to content creators, with the goal of enhancing monetisation.
Following a meeting with TikTok officials in Nairobi, Kenyan President William Ruto announced the initiative. And said Kenyan creatives should be able to earn a livelihood from their ability to create quality content.
The president said: “I had a progress review on the issues of moderation and monetisation of the service with Fortune Sibanda, director of TikTok Africa, among others. Also present was ICT Permanent Secretary John Kipchumba Tanui.
“TikTok will conduct a national training programme in Kenya to empower content creators with in-depth platform knowledge, fostering increased monetisation and promoting positive content.”
The meeting between Ruto and TikTok executives took place just a few weeks after calls to bar the social media platform escalated in East Africa's largest economy.
A motion to ban TikTok in Kenya has been submitted to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetang'ula.
TikTok is currently under increased scrutiny in African countries, due to its content and its impact on a younger audience.
On August 21, Somalia's government took a firm stance by implementing a TikTok ban.
TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew has since announced plans to open a Nairobi office to enhance content monitoring in Africa.
