Mobile operator Tigo Ghana and Tropical Cables & Conductor have partnered in a bid to reduce the number of fire outbreaks in West Africa by clamping down on fake wiring products.

Fake and substandard cable wiring products have been blamed as sources that contribute to residential, commercial and industrial fires in the region.

Subsequently, Tigo and Tropical Cables plan to introduce a customer authentication and advocacy programme to promote the use of quality cables and wiring in West Africa, reports Telecompaper.com.

Customers who buy Tropical's cable brands will be able to authenticate each individual product with a free text message to a short code for instant validation.

Tigo hopes to extend this and similar authentication programs across its operating markets in Africa over the course of the next two years.

Tigo has operations in seven African countries. Worldwide, the operator has 31 million subscribers.
