African telecoms industry veteran Uche Ofodile is joining Millicom's mobile network operation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tigo DRC, as its new general manager.

Ofodile is expected to start her new role on 1 October.

She has previously held management positions at Vodafone Ghana.

Millicom says that prior to working for Vodafone, Ofodile also took on a number of roles in Nigeria. Ofodile also has a BA in Political Science from Ramapo College, New Jersey in the USA and a Diploma in Strategic Marketing from the Columbia University Business School.

"I am so delighted to be leading Tigo's team in DRC. The country is at a very exciting juncture in its ICT development, and there is great potential for further growth. I was attracted by Tigo's ambitious digital vision for its consumers. I am really looking forward to building out the business and its product offering," said Ofodile in a statement.

According to Millicom Q1 2014 results, the telecoms firm said it has over 4 million subscribers in the DRC's Kinshasa and Bas Congo area, and the Kivu region.

Meanwhile, Millicom's second quarter results for 2014 revealed that the company has over 22 million customers on the African continent.

The Tigo brand is present in African countries such as Rwanda, Tanzania and Ghana.
