A 426 km long submarine broadband cable connecting Libya to Greece has become operational, allowing to the North African nation to connect to more European internet hubs.
The Libyan International Telecom Company (LITC) and Chinese firm Huawei Marine Networks yesterday announced the commercial launch of what is dubbed the ‘Silphium’ submarine cable system.
According to the companies, the cable system system has a total design capacity of 1.2 Tbps at 10 Gbps per wavelength, with a provision to upgrade to 40 Gbps and 100 Gbps.
Connecting Darnah in Libya with Chania in Greece, Silphium is the third submarine cable system to land on Libyan shores.
