Tamer El Mahdi has been chosen as Telecom Egypt's new managing director, succeeding Mohamed Nasr, who has stepped down from his executive job and board after serving since March 2023.
According to the telco, the changes were endorsed by the board at a meeting on Tuesday.
In addition to Nasr's departure, Mohamed Al Fowey, vice president and chief technical officer, and Ahmed Hassan, vice president and chief human resources officer, requested to bow out from their positions, which the business accepted.
El Mahdi's new responsibilities include overseeing the process of appointing successors to these positions, ensuring operational continuity and supporting the company's strategic direction.
The new CEO has over 30 years of professional experience in telecommunications, information technology, digital transformation, and non-banking financial services, in addition to leadership roles at multinational and investment firms operating in various local and international markets.
Prior to joining Telecom Egypt, El Mahdi led numerous telcos in North Africa, including Orascom Telecom Media and Technology from 2014 to 2019, and Orascom Telecom Algeria (Djezzy), the country's largest mobile operator from 2008 to 2013.
The industry veteran has also held senior leadership positions at AT&T, where he oversaw large-scale telecom infrastructure projects throughout the region.
El Mahdi has an MBA in International Business Administration from the Maastricht School of Management, a Master's in Project Management from George Washington University, a Master's in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from California State University, and a Bachelor's degree in the same field from Cairo University.
“El Mahdi’s strong track record and wide-ranging expertise qualify him to lead Telecom Egypt into a new phase of growth and expansion, maximise the value of its assets and investments, and drive the company’s ambitious strategy to strengthen its customer base and enhance service quality at both local and international levels, meeting the aspirations of our shareholders and customers alike,” commented Lobna Helal, chairperson of the board of directors of Telecom Egypt.
Helal also acknowledged and appreciated Nasr's leadership, noting that his tenure was during a challenging time for the company.
The newly appointed CEO, El Mahdi, said: “Together with all my colleagues, I am committed to strengthening Telecom Egypt’s position locally and regionally, while advancing our services to meet the evolving needs and aspirations of our customers.”
