International technology and manufacturing firm Honeywell has been contracted to undertake a $2.4 million project that will deliver full automation solution for a fuel storage terminal owned by Petrocity Energy in Kenya.

The process will ensure safe and efficient fuel supply in Petrocitys' new Greenfield Konza terminal storage facility located 60 kilometres southeast of the capital Nairobi.

Honeywell will undertake automation of procedures for product receipting, stock allocation, accounting and field solutions for accurate measurement to ensure safe and reliable stock tracking.

“Honeywell’s solution offers end-to-end integration to give us a global overview of the entire facility and ensure we meet best practice in safety,” said Aman Kurji, managing director of Petrocity Energy.

“Once completed, it will be among the most technologically advanced storage terminals in Africa,” said Kurji.

The new terminal facility will cater for Nairobi's growing demand for fuel, which accounts for more than 50% of the country's oil consumption. The terminal can handle upto 120 million litres of gasoline, diesel and kerosene which is enough stock to fuel Nairobi for up to two months.

Honeywell Process Solutions will deliver all services associated with the project from the initial Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) study, to onsite commissioning and support services with a resident engineer.

Chris Dartnell, vice president and general manager of strategic geographies at Honeywell Process Solutions said projections of long-term economic growth in Kenya has fueled an increase in demand for petroleum products.

“The new Konza storage facility will play a significant role in the development of Kenya’s petroleum industry in this area and the Honeywell technology... will ensure safe, reliable and efficient operations for many years to come.” said Dartnell.

Honeywell will integrate CCTV into both the building management system and process control system for improved process visibility at the terminal and provide online access for more than 100 customers at a time.
