In an environment where life-threatening emergencies are a daily occurrence, having the right equipment on-hand when you need it is critical. SYSPRO’s ERP has helped hospitals like The Red Cross Children’s Hospital in the Western Cape achieve this – not only improving service delivery, but essentially saving lives.

SYSPRO and Value Added Reseller (VAR) Translogic have been privileged to play a part in helping facilitate this transformation, keenly observing how the technological change in the various hospitals has impacted lives, in particular the thousands of children who rely on the Red Cross Children’s Hospital for their healthcare needs.
Healthcare asset management presents complexities not found in most other industries. These assets are maintenance intensive and need to also facilitate a sterile environment. The availability and sterility of these assets directly impacts the level of care and patients’ safety, whilst the maintenance of these assets impacts the hospital’s bottom line.

Healthcare is a right that is enshrined in our constitution, one, which bestows upon every child the right to basic healthcare services. Simple as this may sound, it is an exceptionally daunting task. The Red Cross Children’s Hospital is therefore a very special SYSPRO site.
“Since 2003 the academic hospitals in the Western Cape, including the Red Cross Children’s Hospital, have been using SYSPRO to manage their supply chain process. SYSPRO is truly at the heart of this asset management, easily providing complete visibility of all assets across the entire healthcare system, and throughout the asset’s life-cycle,” explains Meryl Malcomess – SYSPRO marketing director. “This has effectively enabled active control of the planning, acquisition, tracking, maintenance and retirement of assets, which in-turn has allowed for the lowering of costs, maintenance of appropriate levels of assets and maximising service to patients.”
Improved governance clearly improves service delivery. The Western Cape Department of Health (DoH) achieved its first ever unqualified audit for the 2006/7 financial year, the only unqualified report for any health department in the country, and has subsequently maintained this achievement.
“There is no doubt that the DoH in the Western Cape is firmly committed to the implementation of the Public Finance Management Act, and has elevated the status of asset management within all its hospitals, including the Red Cross Children’s facility. SYSPRO has not only provided a platform for effectively managing these critical resources, but has further aided legislative compliance,” says Malcomess.

The Red Cross Children’s Hospital, one of only three paediatric hospitals in Africa, is regarded as the ‘one-stop shop' for excellence in child healthcare and treatment on the continent. It currently performs around 750 complex operations each month. All paediatric liver transplants in South Africa are performed at the hospital and more conjoined twin separations have occurred within its operating theatres than in any other hospital in the world. The Hospital focuses on the medical needs of each and every tiny patient, irrespective of income, race, gender, religion or place of residence.
“We at SYSPRO feel extremely privileged to be able to assist an institution like the Red Cross Children’s Hospital to advance through technology and to further bring healthcare with compassion and commitment to the children of Africa,” concludes Malcomess.
