A good indicator of the health of an exhibition is the calibre of visitors attending. IFSEC SA 2014, which was held between 13 and 15 May at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, provided exhibitors with the perfect opportunity to showcase their security and fire products and services to a captive audience of high-end industry professionals.
The exhibition, the largest and most comprehensive of its kind on the African continent, welcomed 4 763 visitors over the three days, of which 25% were first-time visitors. A large number of visitors travelled from other African countries, including as far afield as Nigeria. This is a clear indication that the marketing of the event to SADC countries is reaching is highly effective. "Many of our exhibitors expressed an interest in gaining an increased footprint in Africa, so this number of cross-border visitors is very encouraging and bodes well for the future," said Joshua Low, IFSEC SA Event Director at show organiser UBM Montgomery.
The profile of visitors to the exhibition included a high percentage of decision makers, responsible for sourcing and acquiring security and fire solutions aimed at mitigating prevalent risks. Of these, 42% came to source solutions and products and 17.25% had a budget of over R10 million.
A wide variety of new products were launched at this year's event and included the Guardian building monitoring system, which reduces the cost of monitoring, managing and reporting equipment and system failures by automatically logging and monitoring the progress of the fault being repaired.
Duxbury Networking highlighted its portfolio of 2N IP (Internet Protocol) communications offerings, ranging from mobile voice solutions to wireless leased line replacement options. The SupreMOBILE is a compact portable biometric terminal from neaMetrics that is sealed to keep out dust, dirt and rain.
Magtouch Electronics' hermetically sealed robust standard batons are housed within a stainless steel corrosion-proof case, and can handle an unlimited amount of points and patrols, with software upgrades available as free downloads.
Gallagher introduced the T20 Terminal; an elegant, robust and easy to use access control card + PIN reader. The T20 Terminal offers an extensible platform, capable of both access control and alarms management.
Hikvision introduced a number of new products including The 6MP DS-2CD6362F-1 fisheye network camera which provides a 360° panoramic view, with multiple viewing modes and virtual PTZ (pan, tilt, zoom).
Assa Abloy's Mul-T-Lock high-security mechanical lock is combined with an advanced GPS location system and F+GSM communication to automatically notify owners when their assets are accessed, together with information on the asset's location.
A hands-on demonstration of Transaction Control Technologies' SmokeCloak drew visitors to the company's stand. Linked to alarm systems, the SmokeCloak releases a dense white fog accompanied by bright flashing lights, guaranteed to disorient and deter any criminal.
The Axessor modular safe lock from Kaba Total Access can be networked or used as a standalone unit and is ideal for use in banks, post offices, restaurant chains, retails chains and for cash-in-transit vehicles.
Clay is Salto Systems' latest locking solution. This cloud-based system comprises ClayIQ, the wireless Clay door lock, the electronic cylinder, the ClayTag (key) containing a secure RFID chip and the Clay repeater, together with the requisite Web app.
SATIR's G96 HD professional thermography camera has a high performance 640 x 480 image resolution UFPA detector, with 307 200 effective pixels offering excellent measurement accuracy. A 50mK thermal sensitivity and an improved spatial resolution of 0.65mrad, gives a crisper and superior image quality.
Cathexis enhanced and rebranded its CathexisVision-2015 IP video management software: The new video analytics suite introduces true vector based analytics and includes direction, speed, U-turn detection, left object detection, loitering, dwell times, queue length monitoring and other features. It also includes 3D people counting, which dramatically improves accuracy over traditional standard camera based solutions.
The quality of exhibitor stands was exceptionally high and the effort of erecting a crowd-pleasing display culminated in an awards ceremony held on Wednesday 14 May at Gallagher Convention Centre. The award for the 48 m²+ stand went to MiRO Distribution, with second place awarded to ADI Global Distribution and international exhibitor Hikvision taking third place. The winner in the 18-48 m² stand category was ACDC Dynamics with Sherlotronics and Instacom coming second and third respectively. Indigo Vision scooped first place in the 18 m² and less category, with Hitek Security and Progroup following in second and third places.
