StarTimes to expand services in Africa

StarTimes has partnered with set-top box (STB) chipset solution provider, ALi, to introduce innovative technology to its STBs and expand their services in Africa.

To date StarTimes says it has over 5 million subscribers in 14 African countries.

According to StarTimes the partnership will enable them improve on quality broadcasting at a cost that will enable their expansion.

The partnership will also include the use of Conax security technology in STBs, the company said.

“Strong eco-system partners are very valuable to StarTimes operations,” XinXing Pang, chairman, StarTimes said.

“The collaboration with global leading partners, ALi and Conax, helps us deliver optimised total solutions in terms of performance, security, and costs that drive DTV expansion in Africa.”

Tony Chang, general manager of ALi’s Broadcast and Broadband Media Business Unit said that the partnership will enhance digital television adoption on the continent.

“With StarTimes’ vast operations throughout Africa and Conax’s forward-looking security technologies, our partnerships will bring high-quality, affordable STB solutions within reach for more people in the region,” he said.

StarTimes recently launched standard definition and high definition STBs in the Kenyan market in a bid to improve the quality of service for subscribers.
