The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secretariat is developing a Regional Artificial Intelligence Strategy and Regulatory Framework to guide responsible and inclusive AI adoption across member states.

Malawi’s Ministry of Information and Communications Technology said this forms part of regional efforts to strengthen ethical governance and harmonised standards.

ICT minister Shadric Namalomba is in Zimbabwe attending a SADC ministerial meeting where digital transformation, artificial intelligence and climate-resilient infrastructure are being discussed as drivers of regional integration and economic growth.

The meeting is also reviewing progress on AI governance in the region, with member states including Malawi having completed UNESCO AI Readiness Assessments, while the SADC Secretariat continues to develop the regional framework.

The Ministry said Malawi remains committed to participating in regional digital policy processes, including AI governance and innovation frameworks that support sustainable development and inclusive growth.

It added that collaboration among SADC member states will be critical to ensure emerging technologies drive job creation, economic transformation and regional competitiveness in the digital era, while ensuring no country is left behind in adopting artificial intelligence and digital innovation across Southern Africa.

The Ministry said policy alignment will support more inclusive regional digital transformation across sectors including agriculture, health, education and finance.
