South Sudan and Financial Sector Deepening (FSD) Kenya are exploring the implementation of a cross-border payment system among member states of the East African Community.

The proposed system aims to boost financial inclusion and strengthen digital banking integration across the regional bloc.

The discussions are being led by Johnny Ohisa Damian, the governor of the Bank of South Sudan, and Njuguna Ndung'u, special advisor to FSD Kenya.

During a meeting in Juba on Tuesday, the two officials explored opportunities for collaboration, including technical support and alignment with broader regional financial integration initiatives.

Ohisa welcomed the FSD Kenya delegation and reaffirmed the commitment of the Bank of South Sudan to supporting regional financial integration and modern payment systems.

Ndung’u, a former governor of the Central Bank of Kenya, is widely recognised for his role in developing Kenya’s national payment systems.

“The initiative seeks to help central banks within the region establish efficient cross-border payment systems while strengthening domestic financial transactions at the micro level,” Ndung’u said.
