South Sudan's ICT minister hosted a no-holds-barred meeting with mobile operators on Monday to discuss critical industry issues such as taxation, shipment delays, foreign exchange limits, SIM card clearing, and the push for digital and electronic payments.

Minister Ateny Wek Ateny met with CEOs Mapula Bodibe and Phillipe Hanna of MTN South Sudan and Zain, respectively, and digital executive vice president De Chan Awuol in the capital, Juba.

Rizik Dominic Samuel, director general of the National Communication Authority (NCA), was also present.

The discussion focused on prioritising digital transactions, aligning pricing, and enhancing collaboration to assist the expansion of the local telecoms industry.

The discussion between telco executives, the minister, and the NCA occurred days after MTN South Sudan met with another body, the Bank of South Sudan, to discuss difficulties hindering the progress of digital platforms.

This comes as the government is supporting the adoption of cashless transactions in the country, where years of violence have slowed the expansion of the telecommunications sector.
