South Sudan has called for the enactment of legislation that guides the proper use of AI and space science.

South Sudan, the world's newest country, is advocating for the enactment of legislation that guides the proper use of the artificial intelligence (AI) resources and space science globally.

This is according to a delegation that represented the nation at the just-concluded St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) held in Russia.

Elijah Alier, Managing Director of independent media regulatory body the South Sudan Media Authority (SSMA), said: "What needs to be done is enact legislation that guides the proper use of the AI resources and space science."

He added: “AI has become key in the digital economy and there is no way to progress without it.”

Speaking at the conclusion of the forum, Telecommunications Under-secretary, Eng. Thomas Gatkuoth Nyak, said the country should not worry about the challenges that might come with AI.

"It (AI) is productive and has a lot to offer especially in the digital economy," Nyak said.

Eng. Mabe Emmanuel, Secretary General of the Universal service and Access Fund (USAF) parastatal, was also part of the delegation to Russia.

He recommended that South Sudan should establish its own data centre.

"It is necessary, plus other infrastructure, should the country (South Sudan) really want to transform digitally and reap the fruits of AI," Emmanuel said.
