South Sudan has set aside $9 million for the design phase of an optic fibre project in the East African country.

The initiative is expected to reduce communication costs, expand coverage, and connect underserved populations.

The funding was approved by the east African country's steering group for the fibre optic implementation project, which reports to the Ministry of Information and Communication Technologies and Postal Services.

This prepares the project for its design phase.

Abraham Mach, the project coordinator, stated in Juba that "this step shall be followed by the signing of contracts with the companies and experts selected to design and lay down the country's fibre optics."

He revealed that these contracts are set to be signed in July.

The fibre deployment will be the most significant exercise since the completion of a fibre-optic link connecting the capital Juba to Mombasa in southern bordering Kenya via Uganda in 2020.

This enhanced internet access but concerns remain over limited infrastructure, low digital literacy, and economic constraints in the nation of 12 million people.
