Ghanaian officials plan to use SMS technology to help verify biometric details of ID card holders before they cast their ballot in the December elections.

The project director of Africa Elections, Jerry Sam, says all those who registered during the recent Biometric Voter Registration Exercise could check their information details through the Ghana Electoral Commission’s (EC’s) designed mobile platform through SMS by sending one’s name, ID number, and polling station to a designated database.

Sam said the EC plans to officially launch the Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) SMS system later today in the capital, Accra.

The West African country plans to register almost 13 million people using the state-of-the-art technology in a bid to discourage vote rigging.
