Samsung plans to expand its range of low-cost feature phones in Africa with the introduction of its GPRS dual-SIM phone Chief Hero brand.

In a statement, Samsung officials say that a significant percentage of mobile phone users in Africa carry multiple SIM cards to take advantage of different pricing plans on offer from the various operators.

The Samsung Chief Hero reportedly has a battery life capable of an 11-hour talk time and 550 hours of standby time. It also has a 1.8” TFT screen, MP3 player and FM Radio.

The phone further supports an additional 13 languages including Yoruba, Swahili and Igbo.

“Following the successful launch of our Chief range earlier this year, we have seen that there is a need for mobile phones that suit the unique needs of developing countries and more importantly, Africa,” says Jaco van Zyl, product manager at Samsung Africa.

“As such, the Samsung Chief Hero mobile phone is a Smart dual-SIM phone that is targeted at these markets.”
