Kenyan telecommunications services provider Safaricom has announced the availability of high-speed internet services in Thika Town, as it moves to progress its country-wide fibre rollout targeting Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in the region.

The telco said to be the East African country's biggest telecoms firm with 26 million subscribers, released a statement saying that, to date, over 2,000 SME customers and over 1,400 buildings countrywide have been connected with the high-speed internet fibre under the 'Fibre for Business' initiative.

The company plans to connect 25 buildings in Thika Town, as it nears completion of Phase One of the fibre rollout which kicked off last year.

"SMEs play a critical role in our economy. Our goal is to provide a platform for these enterprises to grow and unlock their potential by transforming the way they do business using technology. So far, we have seen a lot of interest in the towns we have visited and we hope that by the end of phase one, we will have more SMEs on board," said Rita Okuthe, Director, Safaricom Business.

Thika becomes the 11th connected town after services roll out in Nairobi, Nakuru, Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret, Malindi, Machakos, Nanyuki, Kakamega, and Kisii.

In December the company unveiled a new regional office in Nakuru to serve the Rift Valley region, which is expected to be fully operational this month.

According to its unaudited half year 2017 results (for the period ended 30 September 2016) Safaricom's expenses as a percentage of total revenue declined to 20.6% compared to 22.5% in a similar period last financial year.

Collymore has confirmed that investment in network infrastructure over the last six months totaled Kshs 18.9bn.

On 6 March the company's money transfer platform M-Pesa marked a decade of operation, and, according to an ITWeb report, had, as of December 2016, served almost 29.5 million active customers.
