Kenya’s Safaricom announced, on Thursday, a major milestone of surpassing 50 million customers across its mobile network in the country.

Safaricom stated in a press release that this achievement is partly due to the company’s year-long customer engagement drive, which began last year and will culminate in its 25th anniversary celebrations in October 2025.

With a national population of 53.3 million people, according to Kenya’s National Bureau of Statistics, Safaricom now counts 93.5% of the population as its mobile customers.

“This milestone reflects the deep connection we have built with Kenyans over the past two and a half decades, and as we approach our silver jubilee, we recommit ourselves to always being a force for good and creating what’s next for our customers,” said Dr. Peter Ndegwa, Group CEO, Safaricom.

Safaricom says its journey is deeply intertwined with the story of modern Kenya, one of innovation, resilience, and progress.

Beyond Kenya, Safaricom has successfully expanded its operations to Ethiopia, where it has also recently achieved a significant milestone, surpassing 10 million customers as of July 2025. This rapid growth in a new market it says, underscores Safaricom’s vision to become Africa’s leading purpose-led technology company by 2030.

“Our journey has always been about putting customers first, and this achievement is a direct reflection of that dedication. Looking ahead, our next chapter will be about deepening impact, personalising customer experiences, and driving Kenya’s digital transformation agenda,” added Ndegwa.

Since it began operations in 2000, Safaricom has pioneered the M-PESA mobile money services, which has evolved into a comprehensive digital financial ecosystem, and has been successfully exported to seven other African countries.

Safaricom has also invested in mobile connectivity across Kenya through its 3G, 4G and 5G networks, as well as availing high-speed internet to homes and businesses.

Beyond connectivity and financial services, Safaricom continues to play a critical role in the country’s economic and social development. In the last financial year, the company contributed KES 722 billion to the Kenyan economy, sustaining over 1.28 million jobs. Additionally, more than 8 million Kenyans have benefitted from community projects delivered through the Safaricom and M-PESA Foundations, which continue to drive access to education, healthcare, and economic empowerment opportunities.
