Safaricom Ethiopia has taken a step forward in combining connectivity and compassion with the official relaunch of its network in Arbaminch City as part of its 4G expansion across the country.
The 4G expansion not only enhances digital infrastructure in the Gamo Zone but also highlights the telco’s growing social footprint through a strategic partnership with Mary Joy Ethiopia, a well-established NGO that supports vulnerable women and children.
At a ceremony marking the network relaunch, Safaricom Ethiopia CEO Wim Vanhelleputte reiterated the company’s dual mission. “Together, we are building more than just a network, we are building community resilience, opportunity, and hope,” he said.
As part of its humanitarian outreach, Safaricom Ethiopia donated approximately $9000 (500,000 Birr) to furnish a newly completed elderly care centre operated by Mary Joy Ethiopia.
The centre offers a haven for homeless elders and vulnerable orphans, many of whom have lost their families to HIV and other causes.
The donation will help provide essential supplies, including mattresses and nutritious food, aiming to restore dignity and stability to those most in need.
The handover event was attended by key regional leaders, including Demissie Admasu, chief administrator of the Gamo Zone, and Sister Zebider Zewdie, the founder and executive director of Mary Joy Ethiopia. Both were commended for their leadership in promoting social welfare in the region.
This development follows closely on the back of Safaricom Ethiopia’s broader performance update for the financial year ending March 2025. The company reported 270% revenue growth and expanded 4G coverage to nearly 50% of the population.
Vanhelleputte stressed that Safaricom Ethiopia continues to balance rapid commercial expansion with impactful community investment.
“From donating laptops and internet access to schools in Metu to aiding disaster-hit regions like Afar and Gofa, the telco has reinforced its identity as more than just a telecom provider, it is becoming a development partner,” he said.
