Safaricom has announced it will be making major M-Pesa platform upgrade since 2015.

The company said it is migrating the mobile money platform to a new core known as Fintech 2.0.

According to Safaricom, the upgrade will take place today, Monday, September 22nd, and is meant to strengthen resilience, capacity, and enable advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven innovation.

The three-hour migration is set from 00:30 to 03:30, which was chosen to minimise disruption.

Over 50 million M-PESA customers across Africa are expected to be affected by the upgrade.

“This upgrade is a bold investment in the future of M-PESA and reaffirmation of our commitment to innovation, resilience and customer trust,” said Dr. Peter Ndegwa, Group CEO, Safaricom.

‘’By moving to Fintech 2.0, we are unlocking a platform that not only scales to meet today’s demands but also anticipates tomorrow’s opportunities”.

Safaricom said during a media immersion session that Fintech 2.0 will adopt a microservices architecture to remain future-ready, allowing the delivery of new solutions and services to customers without disrupting the overall ecosystem.

It will also move to a scalable cloud infrastructure to support growth.

While the system initially processed 100 transactions per second, it now handles up to 100 million transactions per day.

Fintech 2.0 will increase current capacity from 4,500 transactions per second (Tsp) to 6,000 Tsp.

Additionally, the platform will also embed advanced AI solution to strengthen fraud detection, enable self-healing, and power real-time monitoring.
