Kenya's leading operator Safaricom has announced an instant rewards system to incentivise customers paying for fuel using Lipa Na M-Pesa.
Participating customers are eligible for free talk time on the Safaricom network if they purchase fuel from outlets such as Total Kenya, Vivo Kenya (Shell), Oil Libya, Kenol Kobil, Gulf Energy and Engen.
Betty Mwangi, general manager of financial services at Safaricom, said the fact Lipa Na M-Pesa was seeing such traction meant it was quickly gaining acceptance as the preferred payment channel in Kenya.
"When distilled further, the statistics indicate that the majority of non-cash transactions are done using M-Pesa, which has over the years grown to become the most convenient way to transact," said Mwangi.
Safaricom is also awarding its merchants in a promotion, which will see the company give away a fully furnished house every week, as well as cash and airtime prizes.
Lipa Na M-Pesa merchants also stand a chance to win a pick-up vehicle every two weeks, as well as cash prizes.
