Liquid Telecom has announced that it has now availed fibre to the home network for Rwandans living in Kigali.
Backed by an investment of US$35 million, users will experience speeds of up to 100Mbps enabling service such as video conferencing and IPTV.
Sam Nkusi, Chairman of Liquid Telecom Rwanda, said "Our goal is to provide a true broadband network which will help our country grow and prosper – and bring 21st century entertainment and information to our people."
Speaking to ITWeb Africa at the Fibre To The Home (FTTH) Council Conference held this week in Kigali, Rwanda, Liquid Telecom Group CEO , Nic Rudnick reiterated the company's firm commitment to broaden the internet scope in Africa.
"We are rolling out fibre networks in South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, DRC, Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya. Another two or three countries will follow very soon," Rudnick said.
"East Africa is a welcoming region, it is easier to do business here. It helps us invest more but we are committed to expand our networks to the whole continent."
Services like IPTV, via the Ipidi (Video on Demand) offering, will be available to 15,000 homes by the end of next year in Kigali.
Liquid Telecom also hopes to open its network to ISPs and Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to extend services to their clients.
In an official statement the company said: "All businesses within central Kigali are already connected to the fibre network and can buy the service direct from Liquid Telecom Rwanda. As well as banks, shops and hotels, the network extends to the new international conference centre and Liquid Telecom will ensure that all new commercial buildings in Kigali are connected as they are built."
