Rwanda has completed the migration of domestic interoperable retail payment transactions to eKash, the country's national digital payment system.
RSwitch, the operator of eKash, said that from 14 July, transfers between bank accounts and electronic money issuers, including account-to-wallet, wallet-to-account, account-to-account and wallet-to-wallet transactions, are processed through the platform.
The transition follows a directive issued by the National Bank of Rwanda in January 2026 and is intended to consolidate domestic interoperable retail payments on a single national platform.
According to RSwitch, the move is expected to improve interoperability between banks and electronic money issuers while supporting the country's broader digital payments strategy.
Rwanda has invested heavily in modernising its national payments infrastructure as part of wider efforts to expand digital financial services, promote financial inclusion and reduce reliance on cash.
The National Bank of Rwanda has identified interoperable payment systems as a key enabler of a more integrated digital economy.
Following the transition, all transfers initiated by customers of banks and electronic money issuers, whether from a bank account to a mobile wallet, a mobile wallet to a bank account or a bank account to another bank account, will be routed through eKash.
RSwitch said transactions processed through eKash will attract a maximum charge of RWF20 (US$0.014) per transaction, levied by participating financial institutions.
The platform supports transactions of up to RWF10 million (US$6,782) per transaction, although financial institutions may apply lower transaction or daily limits in line with their own policies.
eKash is available through the existing digital channels of banks and electronic money issuers, including mobile banking applications and internet banking services.
"RSwitch, as the eKash system operator, remains committed to delivering a secure, seamless, reliable and interoperable national payment infrastructure that enables every Rwandan to send, receive and pay with confidence across financial institutions," said RSwitch.
Established in 2003, RSwitch is Rwanda's national electronic payments switch and is responsible for enabling interoperability and electronic payment settlement across the country's financial sector.
