Rwanda’s education system has received a boost thanks to the integration of artificial intelligence (AI).

Chidi, an AI-powered learning companion for students and educators, has been launched in the country this week.

The learning companion is designed to help students work through complex coding challenges, understand data science concepts and develop problem-solving skills.

Aligned to Rwanda's Vision 2050, the Ministries of Education and ICT and Innovation are collaborating to deploy Chidi within the national education system.

“This collaboration enhances learning, supports educators and builds a workforce ready for the 21st century,” said Paula Ingabire, minister of ICT and Innovation, at the launch on Monday.

The initiative is the result of a partnership between Anthropic, an American AI company, and tech training provider, ALX.

As part of the programme, Rwanda will enable AI training for up to 2 000 teachers and civil servants.

The rollout of Chidi in other parts of the world began on November 4.

ALX aims to deploy Chidi across its technology training programmes throughout Africa.
