T2 Mobile, formerly known as 9mobile, saw a significant turnaround in July 2025, gaining new subscribers for the first time in nearly two years.
The telecom provider added 290,601 subscribers, increasing its client base to 2.7 million from 2.4 million, according to new figures from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
This increased its market share to 1.6%, indicating early signs of recovery after a prolonged slump.
The resurgence corresponds with T2's August rebranding and a recent roaming agreement with MTN Nigeria, which allows consumers to utilise MTN's vast network countrywide.
While T2 experienced growth, the overall industry dropped substantially in July, losing almost 2.4 million customers, the largest decline since February 2025.
Airtel led the decline, with 2.4 million fewer customers, while Globacom and MTN lost 143,701 and 106,345 subscribers, respectively.
Operators attribute some of the reduction to the NCC's ongoing industry audit, which imposes stringent regulations on dormant lines.
According to the NCC's Telecom Identity Risk Management Policy, any number that has not generated revenue for 180 days is considered inactive and can be reassigned after a year.
This clean-up has had a substantial impact on the sector's subscriber base since 2024, when over 64 million dormant lines were delisted.
Despite the subscriber losses, data traffic continues to rise, reaching a record 1.1 billion terabytes in July, demonstrating Nigeria's increasing reliance on digital services.
