The Nigerian Navy has taken the fight against crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism into cyberspace.
Commodore Kabiru Aliyu, the navy’s director of information, has said that the navy has launched a website dubbed www.cot.navy.mil.ng to help Nigerians submit details relating to exploration, nominations, approvals, movement and shipment of petroleum products as promulgated by relevant authorities.
The only authorised agency allowed to nominate, approve lifting, movement and shipment of petroleum products by whatever means of transportation in the West African country is the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
Aliyu added that the website, which is live, is also planned to serve as a means to share information, exchange ideas with the international community and report suspicious activities.
According to the www.cot.navy.mil.ng website, Nigeria produces about 2 million barrels per day, while stolen crude in the country amounts to about 200,000 barrels per day. Crude theft is said to cost Nigeria about 2.4 billion naira daily, says the website.
