Nigeria has edged South Africa in being the first in Africa to sell Japanese electronic maker Sony’s Playstation 4 (PS4) gaming console, but the device is selling for more than double its US retail price in the West African nation.

Nigerian e-commerce website JUMIA has started selling the much-anticipated video gaming device at a price of N 139,995 ($881).

This is more than double its US retail price of $399.

“JUMIA continues to bring the best shopping experience to their customers in Nigeria by being the first company to offer PlayStation 4. The long awaited game console was released in USA on Tuesday selling out in 24 hours. Now the new PS4 is available on the Nigerian market with customers being able to start ordering and have it delivered anywhere in the country,” the e-commerce retailer said in a statement.

The next-generation Playstation 4 was officially launched in the US and Canada on Friday last week.

Meanwhile, South Africa is reportedly set to start selling the console on 6 December at a price of R6299 (around $620).
