The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for a boycott of mobile operators' services starting today in response to tariff increases.
This comes after the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved a 50% pricing increase in late January, the first in twelve years.
The NLC, through its Central Working Committee (CWC), stated that telcos started implementing the new tariffs this week, despite a previous agreement struck with the Federal Government and the NCC to further discuss on the issue and report back before deciding on the new telecom pricing structure.
The group has condemned the increases as "unwarranted" and "premature".
The NLC has instructed Nigerians to boycott MTN, Airtel, and Glo services between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily from today until the end of February. In addition, the NLC demands an immediate reversal of tariff increases.
“The CWC strongly condemns this action by the telecommunications companies, describing it as a betrayal of trust, an affront to the principals of negotiation, and a direct slap on the government and its institutions and a disdain for Nigerian people,” said the NLC in a statement.
