The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has denied rumours over the weekend that it had approved new telecom tariff plans.
In a statement referring to the rumours, the regulator stated: "The public is advised to please disregard."
Instead, the institution said it has issued a directive for all operators to “simplify their current tariff plans in a transparent and fair manner for consumers."
The NCC's position comes as telecom providers, such as MTN, Airtel and Glo seek fresh pricing charges for voice, SMS, data, and other services across the industry.
With the Nigerian economy remaining volatile, telecom businesses in Nigeria have intensified efforts to enact limited pricing increases.
However, the Nigerian government has since rejected the telecom companies' plan to hike tariffs.
President Bola Tinubu’s administration claimed that raising costs for data, voice, and text messages would not solve the sector's problems.
Bosun Tijani, minister of Communications, Innovations and digital Economy, recommended that the companies investigate other ways to reduce cost pressures and excessive operational expenses.
