In his continuous efforts to modernise the communications sector and boost the digital economy, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has named new board members to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), chaired by Idris Olorunnimbe.
This comes less than a week after the country's telecom providers announced plans to establish the Telecom Infrastructure Protection Trust Fund to pay for equipment protection as the key sector in the nation's digital economy faces an alarming increase in infrastructure sabotage, with the NCC warning that major mobile operators are now experiencing more than 1,100 fibre-optic cuts per week.
Dr. Aminu Maida, who has served as NCC's executive vice chairman and CEO since October 2023, will continue in that capacity.
According to the NCC, the appointments also include designees for the Universal Service Provision Fund Board, a program created to ensure widespread access to information and communication technology, particularly in rural, underserved, and unserved communities.
Furthermore, the new board is part of Tinubu's wider strategy to reposition the West African country for long-term growth and prosperity under the Renewed Hope Agenda, which includes a number of sectors and aims to make significant improvements in critical areas such as the economy, security, agriculture, infra-structure, and social welfare.
The NCC stated that the board's collective expertise is expected to steer the communications industry in a positive direction, providing the impetus to further transform Nigeria's digital economy by bringing a wealth of knowledge, strategic insight, and strong governance to enhance the commission's regulatory work.
It said: “This leadership team, as constituted by the president, comprises highly esteemed individuals of proven competence, with vast experience and impressive track records.
“The NCC expresses its profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for these appointments and looks forward to working closely with its supervising ministry and the board to deliver on the president’s Renewed Hope Agenda for Nigeria’s digital economy.”
