The Nigerian government has launched a flagship digital platform the Digitalised Nigeria Education Management Information System (DNEMIS) to automate school census data and consolidate national education records.
The introduction of DNEMIS is expected to help digitise education data, tracklearners, monitor school safety and provide insights for better planning and funding, as well as better outcomes for learners.
Introduced on Wednesday by the Ministry of Education with the support of the European Union, the Norwegian Embassy, the United Kingdom and the United Nations Children's Fund, DNEMIS is positioned to address decades of weak, scattered and inconsistent school records.
The system is built to work both online and offline, the latter mode ensuring it can operate in rural areas without strong internet connectivity or power.
School and local government officials can capture and upload data directly from their smartphones.
The Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC) will monitor DNEMIS to ensure the safety and privacy of the data of officials, students and teachers.
Vincent Olatunji, NDPC National Commissioner and CEO, said it was imperative that privacy and data protection remained at the core of every digital initiative.
Speaking at the unveiling in Abuja, he noted the need to embed privacy into DNEMIS through appropriate privacy policies, encryption, transparency, data minimisation and end-to-end security measures.
“The NDPC stands ready to support the Federal Ministry of Education in aligning this important initiative with global best practices,” Olatunji assured.
Protecting the personal data of students and officials is a legal obligation under the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023.
