Nigeria is set to get a new data centre after Nugi Group, a software development company, announced plans to build a Tier 4 facility in Calabar, Cross River State.

The company said the initiative is designed to transform Nigeria's digital infrastructure and establish the country as an increasingly significant player in the global data economy.

According to Ugi Augustine, President and Solutions Architect of Nugi Group, the decision to locate the plant in Calabar is more than just infrastructure.

He said the move is a conscious decision to decentralise Nigeria's technological investments, which are frequently centred in Lagos and Abuja.

Augustine explained: “Cross River has the resources and cost advantages that make it an ideal choice. By investing here, we’re not only tapping into natural assets but also proving that world-class digital infrastructure can thrive outside the country’s traditional centres of commerce.”

The project relies on a combination of renewable and traditional energy sources. The site is near a waterfall to enable hydroelectric power generation, and there are plans to build a solar grid that can store energy for several months, as well as convert natural gas to electricity.

“These measures are intended to guarantee the 99.99 per cent uptime standard required of Tier 4 facilities,” he added.

Augustine pointed out the facility's presence might attract multinational technology companies looking for dependable, domestic data storage options.
