Nearly 23 million Nigerians remain underserved, limiting their access to communication, economic opportunities, and basic services.

As a result, the Federal Executive Council approved the construction of 4,000 telecom towers across Nigeria to boost digital connectivity, particularly in underserved areas.

The decision was announced by Muhammed Idris, minister of Information and National Orientation, following a Wednesday council meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu.

Idris stated that the decision was based on a joint memo provided by the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy and the Ministry of Finance.

He explained that the project will fund both agricultural mechanisation service centres and digital economy activities, with a focus on communities that lack basic access.

Idris noted that poor connectivity has hindered commerce, weakened public safety, and slowed inclusion in remote areas.

The deployment of new towers, he added, is expected to strengthen security and improve economic activity nationwide.

Progress has been slowed by high right-of-way charges, multiple taxation, and policies that industry players say hinder infrastructure rollout.

This latest approval builds on an earlier plan to deploy 7,000 rural telecom towers and complements the ongoing rollout of 90,000km of fibre-optic cables.
