The Nigerian government through the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) has urged Samsung to immediately issue a recall notice for the Samsung Galaxy Note 7.

A statement by Dupe Atoki, the Director General of CPC, revealed that the Council's attention has been drawn to global recalls of the phone as a result of mishaps, specifically with the device's battery.

She noted that with the popularity of the device among Nigerian consumers, some of whom may have already purchased the smartphones, there is a need for the Council to get involved.

According to the Council Nigerian consumers should be provided with adequate information on the procedure for recall and the appropriate compensation being offered to those affected, in the form of a free replacement device or a refund.

The council appealed to locals who may have the device to stop using them, pending clarification by Samsung. It added it is attempting to determine the number customers affected consumers in Nigeria by the phone mishap.

"There is an urgent need to avert whatever dangers that may be associated with the use of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 in Nigeria," Atoki said.

Nigeria launch postponed

In a related development, Samsung has said it will postpone the official launch of the device in Nigeria.

In a statement made available to ITWeb Africa, the company said the decision to postpone was because it considers customers' security a top priority.

It added that even though the Galaxy Note7 is not yet officially available for sale yet in Nigeria, the device is eligible for replacement.

"All Galaxy Note7 purchased are eligible for replacement despite the original place of purchase," said Samsung.

Current Galaxy Note7 users are urged to visit Samsung Authorised Service Centres for assistance on the replacement program, according to the company.
