Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Education has dismissed reports of a cyber attack on the National Education Management Information System (NEMIS).
Allaying fears that the platform had been hacked or breached, the ministry explained that a technical Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate configuration issue at the hosting level had resulted in users experiencing warning messages.
It reported that the technical team and the hosting provider had resolved the issue promptly and that the platform was fully functional, secure and accessible to authorised users.
“At no time was the NEMIS platform hacked, breached or subjected to any cyber attack,” the ministry stated.
It assured: “The integrity, confidentiality and availability of data on the platform remain fully intact.”
An SSL certificate is a digital data file hosted on a website’s origin server, enabling encrypted communication between a web browser and a server, keeping sensitive data secure and verifying the website’s authenticity.
The education ministry emphasised that there was no data loss, alteration or exposure of sensitive information and that the integrity and confidentiality of the data remained intact.
It has urged the public and media organisations to verify information through official channels before circulating claims.
The ministry added, “Members of the public, education stakeholders and development partners are advised to disregard reports suggesting that the NEMIS platform was compromised, as such claims are unfounded.”
The government has affirmed its commitment to maintaining high standards of digital security and governance under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
NEMIS is Nigeria’s centralised database platform used to collect, process and report reliable education data across the West African country.
“The Federal Ministry of Education continues to implement robust security measures, regular system monitoring, infrastructure safeguards and periodic security assessments to ensure the reliability, availability and protection of the platform,” the ministry assured.
