Two next-generation communication satellites, NIGCOMSAT-2A and NIGCOMSAT-2B, have been approved for acquisition and deployment by Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council.
Thales Alenia Space and Israel Aerospace Industries have been selected to deliver the high-throughput satellites, with Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) targeting a launch window between 2027 and 2028.
Contract finalisation, manufacturing, and technical preparations are now underway.
NIGCOMSAT must now ensure the national investment delivers tangible economic and technological benefits across the country, according to Jane Egerton-Idehen, managing director and CEO of NIGCOMSAT.
This is a significant milestone for NIGCOMSAT and for Nigeria's broader digital infrastructure ambitions, said Egerton-Idehen.
She went on to say NIGCOMSAT-2A and NIGCOMSAT-2B will strengthen national satellite capacity, expand connectivity and support critical communications across the country.
Beyond expanding commercial broadband access and reaching underserved rural communities, the new orbital infrastructure will strengthen communications used by Nigeria's defence and security institutions.
NIGCOMSAT is currently deploying satellite connectivity to secretariats across all 774 local government areas under Project 774, alongside private sector partners including Infratel Africa, Hotspot Network Limited, Dimension Data, and INQ.
