TelOne‘s Lawrence Nkala this week unveiled the TelOne Connect app in Harare.

Zimbabwe’s fixed-voice operator, TelOne, is pushing into the mobile era with a VoIP app that allows users to access their landlines anywhere, in an effort to secure relevance for the fading technology in a smartphone-driven market.

TelOne Connect, a mobile and desktop application was launched in Harare this week, in a move the state-owned operator hopes will keep fixed-voice usage alive.

The app permits Zimbabweans to make and receive landline calls directly from their smartphones or laptops.

Lawrence Nkala, TelOne chief executive, revealed that only about 20% of its 500 000+ registered landline clients are presently active. The telecommunications company now plans to migrate as many of the remaining 80% users as possible onto the new platform.

Speaking at the launch, Mkala argued that landlines still matter, especially for businesses, families and professionals seeking reliability and identity in communication.

“TelOne Connect is a bold leap forward in how Zimbabwe should be communicating going forward. In today’s world, mobility, flexibility and digital access have become essential parts of communication. TelOne Connect introduces a timely solution built for the modern Zimbabwean, a simple, affordable and secure, powered by our trusted infrastructure,” he said.

Nkala insisted that landlines continue to hold strategic value in a world dominated by mobile phones.

“Voice remains dependable revenue, and users still value clarity, reliability and identity. In business, a landline still signals credibility. Our task is to modernise it, not abandon it,” he said.

Explaining TelOne Connect, Nkala said the app functions much like global VoIP platforms but with a local twist. Once downloaded from the App Store or Google Play, users can make and receive calls using their existing landline number, use the service over any mobile or WiFi network, regardless of provider. “They can also sync contacts and switch seamlessly between devices, while enjoying encrypted and secure calling through TelOne infrastructure,” he stated.

Furthermore, when the app is active, incoming calls are routed to the smartphone or laptop, and users can toggle back to the physical handset when needed, added Nkala.

People without a landline can also sign up for virtual TelOne voice accounts, he said.

TelOne is targeting 20 0000 activations by the end of December, banking on the app to lift recharge rates from 3% to 8% and increase active voice lines.

Nkala said the app marks TelOne’s most aggressive attempt yet to modernise the landline and keep it relevant in Zimbabwe’s digital future.
