Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe’s fall down a staircase topped Google's trending searches in South Africa on Thursday.

The tumble down the steps quickly escalated to trending topic and joke of the day on social media platforms.

On Wednesday evening social media was abuzz with a flurry of tweets and memes showing the 90-year old tumbling down as he walked off a podium.

Mugabe and Uncle Bob were trending on popular social network, Twitter.

Some jokesters quickly took to social media to poke fun at the incident.

“I didn't know #RobertMugabe could bust such moves!” said ‏@CarolRadull on Twitter.

“These mugabe memes are killing me! Yo!!” @MediaMK said.

“Can you dance? Well, you can't beat #Mugabe even as he approaches the 1 century mark,” said @fndaga on Twitter.

Spoof images accompanied the Tweets with one showing Mugabe on a surfboard hitting a big wave, while another depicts him on the soccer field tackling another player.

Other spoof images show Mugabe as one of Beyonce’s dancers dancing along to the popular hit song ‘put a ring on it’.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that some of the photographers who captured the fall were forced to delete the images.
